David’s Story:
From Childhood Focus to Lifelong
Recovery Advocacy
As a child, David’s grandmother recognized something that others did not: his restless energy and difficulty focusing were signs of an undiagnosed condition. Rather than scolding or dismissing him, she offered a simple act of love and guidance. She sat him at her knee and turned his attention to the evening news, narrated by her favorite broadcaster, Walter Cronkite. That moment became a turning point.
The images of astronauts stepping onto the Moon, soldiers in Vietnam, civil rights marchers demanding justice, and crowds protesting political unrest captivated his young mind. What began as a way to keep him calm became the seed of a lifelong fascination with media, storytelling, and the power of information. This early exposure shaped David’s professional path.
He pursued radio and television production, becoming Sports Director and on-air announcer for WRSH-FM, later attending Livingstone College, and serving with distinction in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, where he was named Marine of the Year. His career in media and AV production gave him the tools to tell stories that matter — stories that could reach hearts, change minds, and inspire communities. But David’s journey was not without struggle. For more than 35 years, he has walked the path of recovery, facing the challenges of addiction and the hidden weight of PTSD, depression, and ADHD.
Like many in recovery, his efforts were complicated by these undiagnosed comorbidities. Yet through perseverance, the support of mentors, and the strength of the DC Recovery community, he found healing and purpose. He credits the continuum of care model and the guidance of recovery heroes — Ron Clark, Co-founder of RAP, Inc.; Jim Vance, broadcast legend; and Jami Freeman, master recovery coach, for shaping his vision and commitment.
Today, David stands as a Certified Recovery Coach and Recovery Advocate, determined to give back to the community that sustained him. His mission is clear: to expand awareness, build large-scale peer coaching programs, and harness the power of media to educate and inspire. Through video production and storytelling, he seeks to illuminate the realities of substance use disorders, promote prevention, and empower individuals to embrace recovery.
For David, this work is not just professional — it is deeply personal. It is the continuation of a journey that began at his grandmother’s knee, when she helped him find focus in the world’s events. It is the fulfillment of a promise to honor the mentors and angels who guided him. And it is dedicated to the DC and national recovery communities, and to anyone in need of compassionate support and guidance.
David’s life is proof that recovery is not only possible, but transformative. His story is one of resilience, service, and the belief that through connection, storytelling, and advocacy, we can build a stronger, healthier community together.
